Project 1.1.4 "Fun Lights"
"I was successful at my first soldering, I finished my board without melting any components or burning myself. There was a Total of 49 solder joints. Overall I'm very happy with what I've made."
Regardless of whether you have your driver’s license or will soon be getting it, two absolute certainties exist. One; you will want to drive your parents’ expensive car, and two; they will not let you. To a parent, the reasoning is obvious. When you are first learning to drive, you are most likely to make a mistake. Wouldn’t it be better to make these mistakes in the ten-year-old family mini-van? Like driving, good soldering requires practice. In this activity, you will practice your soldering skills while constructing a simple Fun Light Project. This Fun Light Project has many of the same components as the Board Game Counter that you will construct in a future activity. Moreover, like the old mini-van, if you happen to damage the Fun Light while honing your soldering skills, it’s not a big deal
Conclusion
1. Solder is an alloy of what two metals?
-Lead and Tin
2. What is tinning, and why is it important to keep the tip of your soldering iron tinned?
-Tinning is when you add solder to the tip of the soldering iron and it's important because it keeps from burning your components by transferring the heat
3. List the six most common types of bad solder connections
-A cold solder joint -Too much solder -Too little solder
-Bridging -burned components -Gray joint
4. What are the two techniques that can be used to de-solder a component from a PCB
-Solder sucker -Solderwick
5. The solder used in electronic application is frequently called 60/40 solder. Why?
-60% Tin -40% Lead
6. What is a cold solder joint?
-When you don't heat up all compounds before applying solder
7. What is the melting point of 60/40 solder?
-460
8. What is the typical wattage of a soldering iron used in electronic application?
- 25 to 30 watts

Project 1.1.5 "board game counter"
"I'm very happy to say that I've not messed up yet on soldering. As Mr.beatty would say success is a terrible teacher, so he must be a great one (suck up points)."
How many times has this happened to you? It is a rainy Sunday afternoon, there is nothing on TV, and you decide to play a board game with the family. You go to the closet and get out the Monopoly® game, only to find that the die is missing (note: die is the singular for dice). Wouldn’t it be great to have a simple electronic device to replace all the dice that have gone missing? Well, after you complete this project, that’s exactly what you will have. In this project you will assemble and test a Board Game Counter kit that randomly displays a number between one and six in the patterns typically seen on board game die.
Conclusion
NUMBER ROLLED
1- Was rolled 6/202- Was rolled 2/20
3- Was rolled 5/20
4- Was rolled 2/20
5- Was rolled 4/20
6- Was rolled 1/20
1. How evenly distributed were the numbers for your Board Game Counter? If your game was perfect, then each number should have come up approximately 16.67% of the time. Do you think your Board Game Counter is fair? Why or why not?
- The numbers generated by my counter were not distributed evenly, and every number came out at least once out of twenty rolls
2. Another word for troubleshooting is debugging. Do a little research (Google, of course) to determine the origin of the term debug and who was the person to coin the phrase.
- It's not clear of where the term came from but one guess is Admiral Grace Hopper in the 1940's, he was attributed with saying "bug" and "debugging".
